Located on the occupied South Campus of Bates Technical College, this new state-of-the-art facility will revolutionize firefighter education. Boasting flexible drill yards, a dynamic live-fire training structure, and simulated fire station areas, it promises immersive learning experiences. Modern amenities include updated classrooms, a fitness room, and a cutting-edge computer lab, alongside specialized EMT training facilities and an ambulance simulator. The facility will be the college's first all-electric building and is pursuing LEED Gold certification.
Ethos Civil is providing civil engineering services for the new Fire Service Training Center. Stormwater from the site flows into Flett Creek, a Category II wetland in Tacoma. As a result, wetland protection was required alongside flow control and water quality measures. Ethos studied the site, coordinated with the project team and city, and utilized complex hydrological modeling to develop a cost-effective stormwater management plan that maximizes training space and programming area.
Site improvements include parking lot and paving improvements, ADA upgrades, frontage improvements such as driveways, curb ramps, sidewalk and bus stop, stormwater treatment and infiltration capacity analysis, private fire hydrant network design, and gutter capacity analysis.
The Fire Service Training Center is set to open in 2026.
